Run RcloneView on TrueNAS for Cloud Backup and Multi-Cloud Sync
TrueNAS gives you rock-solid local storage with ZFS. But local storage alone isn't a backup strategy. Add RcloneView to sync your NAS datasets to the cloud with a visual file manager.
TrueNAS (formerly FreeNAS) is one of the most popular NAS operating systems, trusted for its ZFS-powered data integrity. But ZFS protects against drive failures, not against fires, theft, ransomware, or site-wide disasters. For true data protection, you need offsite backups. RcloneView adds visual cloud management to your TrueNAS setup, making it easy to sync datasets to any of 70+ cloud providers.

Manage & Sync All Clouds in One Place
RcloneView is a cross-platform GUI for rclone. Compare folders, transfer or sync files, and automate multi-cloud workflows with a clean, visual interface.
- One-click jobs: Copy · Sync · Compare
- Schedulers & history for reliable automation
- Works with Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, S3, WebDAV, SFTP and more
Free core features. Plus automations available.
Why TrueNAS + RcloneView?
TrueNAS includes a basic Cloud Sync Tasks feature, but it's limited in scope and difficult to troubleshoot. RcloneView provides:
- Visual file browsing — see your TrueNAS files next to your cloud storage
- 70+ cloud providers — far more than TrueNAS Cloud Sync supports natively
- Folder comparison — verify backups are complete and accurate
- Job scheduling — flexible scheduling with monitoring
- Encrypted backups — crypt remotes for zero-knowledge encryption
Deployment Options
Docker container (recommended)
Run RcloneView as a Docker container on TrueNAS SCALE. This is the cleanest approach — isolated from the host system with easy updates.
Direct installation
On TrueNAS SCALE (Linux-based), you can install RcloneView directly. TrueNAS CORE (FreeBSD-based) should use the Docker approach via a VM or jail.
Key Workflows
Back up datasets to S3 or B2
Browse your TrueNAS datasets in one pane, cloud storage in the other. Create sync jobs that back up critical datasets to Backblaze B2, AWS S3, or Wasabi.
Schedule nightly backups
Set up automated nightly backups so your cloud copy stays current:
Verify backup integrity
ZFS checksums protect local data. Use Folder Comparison to verify that cloud backups match your NAS:
Encrypt before uploading
Protect sensitive NAS data with crypt remotes. Your backup provider cannot read the files — only you hold the encryption keys.
Multi-cloud redundancy
Back up to two or more providers simultaneously. If one provider has an outage, your data is safe on the other.
Recommended Backup Strategy
| Data Type | Cloud Tier | Schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Critical documents | S3 Standard | Every 6 hours |
| Media library | Backblaze B2 | Nightly |
| Archives | S3 Glacier | Weekly |
Getting Started
- Install RcloneView via Docker on TrueNAS SCALE.
- Add your cloud accounts in the remote manager.
- Create backup jobs for critical datasets.
- Schedule and verify with Folder Comparison.
ZFS protects your data locally. RcloneView protects it everywhere else.
