Sync Google Drive to DigitalOcean Spaces — Cloud Backup with RcloneView
Backing up Google Drive to DigitalOcean Spaces gives you an affordable, S3-compatible safety net for every file in your Drive.
Google Drive handles collaboration and real-time editing brilliantly, but it is not designed as an archival backup target. DigitalOcean Spaces offers flat-rate S3-compatible object storage at $5 per month for 250 GB (with additional storage at $0.02/GB), making it a predictable and affordable destination for Drive backups. RcloneView connects both services and keeps them synchronized through scheduled jobs with real-time progress monitoring.

Why DigitalOcean Spaces for Google Drive Backup
DigitalOcean Spaces provides S3-compatible object storage across multiple regions (NYC, SFO, AMS, SGP, FRA). Its flat pricing model eliminates the per-request cost surprises that AWS S3 can produce. For teams already running infrastructure on DigitalOcean, Spaces integrates natively — files synced from Google Drive become immediately accessible to Droplets, Kubernetes clusters, and serverless functions.
Google Drive's native backup options are limited. Google Takeout produces one-time exports, not continuous mirrors. Third-party backup tools often charge per-user fees that rival the cost of additional Google Workspace licenses. Syncing Drive to Spaces via RcloneView costs only the Spaces storage fee and runs on your own machine or server.
Setting Up the Remotes
Add a Google Drive remote in RcloneView by selecting "Google Drive" as the provider. The OAuth flow authenticates through your browser — sign in with your Google account and grant access. You can scope the remote to your entire Drive, a specific shared drive, or a single folder by configuring the root folder ID.
For DigitalOcean Spaces, create an S3-compatible remote. Select "Amazon S3 Compliant" and then "DigitalOcean Spaces" from the provider dropdown. Enter your Spaces Access Key and Secret Key (generated in the DigitalOcean control panel under API > Spaces Keys). Set the endpoint to your preferred region, such as nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com or fra1.digitaloceanspaces.com. RcloneView validates the credentials and lists your existing Spaces.
Building the Sync Job
Open RcloneView's Job Manager and create a new job. Set Google Drive as the source and your DigitalOcean Space as the destination. Choose "Sync" mode to maintain an exact mirror, or "Copy" mode if you want to preserve deleted files in Spaces even after they are removed from Drive.
Google Drive stores Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides as cloud-native formats without traditional file extensions. RcloneView automatically exports these as their Microsoft Office equivalents (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) during transfer, ensuring they land in Spaces as usable files. You can customize the export format in the remote configuration if you prefer PDF or other formats.
Configure parallel transfers to speed up the initial sync. Four to eight concurrent transfers typically work well within Google Drive's API quotas. Set a bandwidth limit if you share the connection with other services.
Scheduling and Ongoing Maintenance
Schedule the sync job to run nightly or weekly depending on how frequently your Drive changes. RcloneView's scheduler supports cron-style timing, and each run only transfers files that have changed since the last sync. The job history panel tracks every run with timestamps, file counts, and transfer volumes.
DigitalOcean Spaces supports a built-in CDN. Once your Drive files are synced, you can enable the Spaces CDN to serve files globally — useful for distributing marketing assets, documentation, or media that originated in Google Drive.
